American Indians and the US Government

After the Treaty of Paris of 1783, contact between American Indians and the United States government was transformed as attention turned from warring colonial forces to the burgeoning central body of Washington. This period marked the beginning of the development of tribes as twenty-first century, federally-recognised entities with legislative infrastructures that engaged with the government as negotiators and eventually citizens.
