Description | From the Newberry Library Catalogue: Contemporary copies of three separate "cartas annuas" or annual reports prepared by the Provincial or head of the Jesuits in Mexico: Rodrigo de Cabredo for the year 1615, and Nicolás de Arnaya for 1616-1617. These reports describe personnel, conditions, and events in the various Jesuit convents, schools, and missions of Mexico and Guatemala. The second report also contains two accounts of the rebellion and massacre by the Tepehuan Indians of eight Jesuit priests, and a letter from Father Luis de Bonifaz describing the funeral rites in the city of Guadiana for four of the priests. The first report for the year 1615 is dated May 1, 1616, and is signed by Cabredo. The second, for 1616, is signed May 18, 1617 by Arnaya; he also signed the third report, for 1617, which is undated. |
