Description From the Newberry Library Catalogue: Drake’s transcriptions, with editorial comment, of fourteen copies of a "News-Letter" supplied to him by John A. Lewis. The newsletters contain eyewitness narratives and other documents mainly relating to seventeenth and eighteenth century Indian captivities, wars, peace negotiations, etc., extracted from a variety of printed and other sources. They document Maj. John Doughty’s expediton to the Chickasaw and battle on the Tennessee River (1790); peace negotiations between Alexander McGillivray of the Creeks and Edward Telfair of Georgia (1790); a massacre of captive Indians at Marblehead, Mass. (1677); the capture of Baron de Graffenried (North Carolina Palatines) and John Lawson by the Tuscarora Indians (1711); the captivity of Pennsylvania widow Massy Harbison (1792); Missouri Indian revenge upon a French Louisiana trader (1741); Conrad Weiser’s embassy to the Iroquois (1745); events leading up to a Maine Indian massacre (1749), etc.

Author of numerous works on Indian and colonial history; founder and officer of the New England Historic Genealogical Society; proprietor of a Boston antiquarian bookshop; and accumulator of an important private library relating mainly to American and North American Indian history. This library was sold at auction a year after Drake’s 1875 death.
