|Date||View date in the chronology|
|Description||From the Newberry Library Catalogue: Autograph letter, dated May 25, 1639 in La Conception, the Jesuit residence in the Huron village of Ossossané (near Fort Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, Ontario), to Monsieur St. Martin, curé in Beauvais, France, from his cousin, Simon Le Moyne. Despite the wilderness in which he lives--"ce bout du monde"--Father Le Moyne is uplifted by the sight of the Huron Indians attending Mass and saying prayers. He describes how Catholic prayers and creeds have been translated into the Huron language, and concludes by mentioning a Jesuit text which will be published in Paris, and which he hopes his cousin will read.|

French Jesuit missionary to the Hurons (Wyandots), southeast of Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada. Born in Beauvais, France, Le Moyne arrived in Québec in June of 1638, and travelled with Father Jérôme Lalemant, the new Jesuit Superior, and Father François du Peron to Huron territory in late summer. He worked among the Hurons until 1649, and returned to Québec in 1650. As an ambassador of peace to the Iroquois, Father Le Moyne made six trips into Iroquois country between 1654-1662, each time risking his life. He died at Cap-de-la-Madeleine on Nov. 24, 1665.
Newberry Library: Verso of letter bears address to the Curé St. Martin in Beauvais, France.
