Date | View date in the chronology |
Document Type | Manuscript |
Description | From the Newberry Library Catalogue: Memoranda, probably transcribed between 1702 and 1750, concerning commerce, navigation, and French possessions in America. Vol. I contains a memo on these issues addressed to the French delegates at Ryswick in 1697, as well as several memos concerning Cape Breton Island, Acadia, and the beaver trade, signed in Québec by Raudot between July 16, 1708 and Sept. 20, 1710. Vol. II deals with Pensacola, Louisiana, and Natchez, including discovery of the area, descriptions of the Indians, and an Indian vocabulary list. Gabaret de Lerondière’s memo of Dec. 1716 provides detailed information on the slave trade between French Guinea on the Africa coast, and Haiti and French Guiana (Cayenne) in the Caribbean, listing requirements for outfitting a slave ship, the best times of the year to travel, names of important slave-trading centers, and desirable merchandise with which to conduct business. Following Father Bobé’s essay on the origin of the people of America, vol. III presents accounts of explorations of the California coast, the search for the Mer de l’Ouest, and the discovery of the Mississippi River by La Salle. There are descriptions of Michilimackinac by Cadilla de Lamothe, and Illinois country by Pierre de Liette, and additional accounts of California, Greenland, Mexico, New Orleans, Natchez, and Nacogdoches, as well as a 1726 census of Canada. Although vol. IV deals principally with Constantinople, there is one memo on the French Windward Islands, and another on Natchez, which describes an Indian attack on the Garrison du Poste in 1729-1730. |
