|Description||From the Newberry Library Catalogue: Chart of information on the estates or "seigneuries" granted and established within the province of Québec between Jan. 15, 1636 and June 1, 1753. Information extracted from the land registers of the Office of the Intendant and the Conseil Supérieure by order of the governor, François Bigot, is arranged in thirteen columns, ruled in red, and includes the name of the person(s) who granted the concession; names of the original grantees; owners prior to and following the conquest; dates of the concessions and ratifications of the properties; location and size of the estates (measured in "lieues", each one equal to approximately two-and-a-half English miles); special privileges included with the land grants and the corresponding laws governing those privileges; obligations of the grantees; clauses and conditions by which they must abide; and finally, the special privileges reserved for the King, such as the right to all oak timbers necessary for shipbuilding, and all other lumber necessary for public works construction. In some cases, the King also reserved the red pine forests for the production of tar and pitch, and required that beaches and public highways and roads be kept clear.|
