Description | From the Newberry Library Catalogue: Photographs, ca. 1866-ca. 1904 and Cherokee Documents, 1730-1909. There are photographs of many Cherokee individuals and others, including Elias Boudinot, Lewis Downing, Quanah Parker, J.T. Parks, Daniel and John Ross, Sitting Bull, and Stand Watie; of groups such as the Cherokee delegation to Washington in 1866; and of Cherokee sites, mainly in Tahlequah, but also in Fort Gibson, Park Hill, and Salina, Okla. Dating from 1835, documents and letters (originals and copies) are written by or concern prominent Cherokees (John Ross, Stand Watie, Lewis Downing, Daniel H. Ross, D.W. Bushyhead, and W.C. Rogers) and government officials (D.N. Cooley, Andrew Johnson, and James Harlan). Many concern U.S. government relations, particularly during the Civil War and its aftermath, and others deal with Cherokee governmental affairs, land allotments, school financing, regulations for intermarriage, and other matters. |
