Description From the Newberry Library Catalogue: Accounts of travel by Jonathan Carver in 1766-1768 to the American Midwest, and by Patrick Brydone to Sicily and Malta in 1770, translated into Dutch by J. B. J. Breton in 1805-1806. Carver journeys from Boston to Michilimackinac, travels down the Mississippi from St. Anthony Falls in Minnesota to Natchez, and explores Lake Superior and Lake Huron, returning to Boston via Michilimackinac, Detroit, and Lake Erie. He describes the Indians, their dress, dwellings, and government, as well as their dances, hunting, warfare, games, religion, funeral customs, language, and native animals. Brydone narrates a journey from Naples to Messina, and visits to Catania, Mt. Etna, Syracuse, and Malta, where the Order of St. John of Jerusalem was founded. He discusses Gozo Island, Agrigento, and Palermo, and describes the Festival of Santa Rosalia, and the manners and morals of Sicilian fishermen.
