Observation, Representation and Cultural Encounters

Since the first Europeans set foot in North America, those who encountered the native peoples of the continent have set out to document their experiences and impressions; after a time, Indians began to represent themselves in turn using European technology. The records of these encounters are an essential resource for understanding the impact of each culture on the lives and understanding of the other.
