Description From the Newberry Library Catalogue: September 26, 1745, letter from Massachusetts lieutenant governor Spencer Phips to John Stoddard (for many years a member of the Massachusetts provincial council, chief justice of the court of common pleas, and colonel of the militia), appointing him commissioner to a council with the Six Nations in Albany, N.Y., scheduled to begin Oct. 4, 1745. Attended by representatives of the New England colonies, the meeting was called in an attempt to engage the Iroquois in the British war effort against the French.
