Additional Information Stephen Williams (1693-1782), son of the Rev. John Williams, was born in Deerfield, Mass. and taken prisoner to Canada along with most of his family by a party of French and Indians in 1704. After his release, he was later educated at Harvard College and eventually ordained as a minister settling in Longmeadow, Mass. Williams played an important role in establishing the Stockbridge Indian Mission in western Massachusetts in 1734 and in securing the services of the Rev. John Sergeant as its first minister. With funds from the Company for Propagation of the Gospel in New England as well as private donations, Sergeant commenced to educate and christianize the remnants of the Stockbridge Indians. He continued to live and work among the indians until his death in 1749.
