Description From the Newberry Library Catalogue: July 9, 1857, letter from Interior Secretary Thompson, in his capacity as trustee for the Indian tribes, to the Washington banking firm of Riggs & Co., directing the investment of $64,000 in Cherokee funds stemming from the treaty of 1835, and $414,000 in Delaware funds under the treaty of 1854. Thompson stipulates that the monies should be placed in "safe and profitable stocks".
