Description From the Newberry Library Catalogue: Pass, Dec. 14, 1747, written in Boston for John Hawks, former commander of Fort Massachusetts, by Massachusetts governor Shirley, allowing Hawks to proceed to Canada to exchange Pierre-Marie-Joseph Raimbault de St. Blaint (wounded French cadet captured in Northfield, Oct. 16, 1747) for Samuel Allen (eight-year-old captured Aug. 25, 1746, near Deerfield, by Indians who had participated in the taking of Fort Massachusetts). The exchange party left Deerfield Feb. 8, 1747/48, arrived in Montreal Feb. 27, and returned to Deerfield Apr. 30.
